       Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences

    The Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences is a public state higher-education research institution in the area of biotechnical sciences. The main task of this institution is to enable the graduated students with knowledge and skills for individual managing of small family business in the area of biotechnology. This Faculty is the only one of its kind in the country and has characteristic study programs. Starting for the year 1999/2000 by virtue of the Decision of the Ministry of Education (ref. 12-2920/2-1999), the Higher Agricultural School had grown into a Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences. Within the ten years of functioning, the Faculty has educated many engineers (bachelor) and masters who are included in the food production industry.

Formally, the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences is a higher level of the Higher Agricultural Schooldating back from 1960. The launching of such higher educational institution signified filling a gap of many decades in the higher education system of biotechnical sciences and educating staff for the food production capacities.

 

 

 

The higher education activities of the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences are organized on different levels of higher education: graduate studies, postgraduate studies and acquiring level of doctor of science, as well as many fundamental, developmental and applicative researches, conducting complex research projects of wider interest for the environment, courses, seminars, workshop for the staff and the students. The graduate studies of the three study programs (animal food processing, management in bio-technique and farm production) are realized in accordance with the ECTS system and adjustment of the study programs with the legal regulations. The teaching activities of these study programs are organized in eight semesters (four years) for the first two and six semesters (three years) for the last study program. Teaching is realized as: lectures, tutorials – seminars, seminar papers and obligative practical training.  Postgraduate studies are realized as: lectures, exams and other form of teaching activities. After preparation and defending of the master thesis, the postgraduate students acquire the title of Master of Biotechnical Sciences. The title Doctor of Biotechnical Sciences is acquired after completing doctoral studies and defending doctoral dissertation or only by defending the doctoral dissertation.

The language of instruction at the FBS is English.

Within the framework of the University international cooperation, the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences in Bitola realizes research and technical cooperation with many foreign and national higher education institutions and other forms of international relations. The Faculty functions under the principle of academic autonomy and Bologna process – the implementation of credit transfer system. The autonomy implies academic freedom of managing, financial autonomy, accountability and responsibility as well as inviolability of the autonomy – independence, and institution self-management. The role and tasks of the FBS are: transfer of knowledge, organizing studies, promotion and development of biotechnical sciences, especially in the graduate study programs:

  1. study program of Animal products processing;
  2. study program of Farm production, and
  3. study program of Management in bio-technique.

The development of the students’ creative abilities comes to the fore in the process of preparing students for postgraduate studies. First postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences are organized in the year 2006/2007, as postgraduate studies in Quality and safety of milk and dairy products and Quality and safety of meat and meat products. Ever since 2009/2010 the Faculty fully implemented the Bologna process on postgraduate level by transforming it to second cycle studies for the three study programs of the Faculty.

Thus, the students are educated for the profile which necessitates application of research results, encouragement of the technical and technological development of our country, encouraging the research activities in the process of providing conditions for production of high quality food products.

During its ten-years of existence, the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences justified its purpose in educating professionals in the area of biotechnical scientific disciplines and other similar fields of research. The results from the educational process of many engineers and masters in the past 10 years, speak in favor of the existence of a higher education institution of this kind.

Higher education activities of the Faculty of Biotechnical Sciences

The educational process is conducted by teaching staff of the Faculty. The staff realizes the teaching programs in accordance with the study program provided.

The education process of the faculty is divided in two levels: graduate and postgraduate studies. The Faculty also offers professional education of shorter periods.

Professional and academic title after graduation. After graduating from the first cycle of studies the graduated students acquires the title: graduated engineer in Animal products processing, graduated manager in Bio-technique and graduated engineer in Farm production, followed by the name of the study program respectively.

After graduating from the second cycle of studies the graduated student acquires the title: master, followed by the name of the study program.

After graduating from the third cycle of studies and public defense of the doctoral dissertation, the person acquires the title PhD (Doctor of science), followed by the area of the doctoral thesis.

The description of the profile, the academic title for the graduate studies of all the study programs is a document titled Diploma which goes as: Graduated engineer, while the evidence for the content of study program is the Transcript of Records that contains all the information referring to the courses and the grades of the student.

After graduating from the third cycle studies and public defense of the doctoral dissertation, the person who completed the studies acquires the title PhD, Doctor of science in the area of the doctoral thesis.

The description of the profile, the academic title for the graduate studies of all the study programs is a document titled Diploma which goes as: Graduated engineer, while the evidence for the content of study program is the Transcript of Records that contains all the information referring to the courses and the grades of the student.

The Faculty also issues a Diploma Supplement according the ECTS principles and the criteria for international recognition and acceptance.

The basic program goals of the faculty of Biotechnical Sciences are:

  1. 1.Intensive application of ECTS in accordance with the Bologna Declaration for application of the European Credit Transfer System;
  2. 2.The study programs comprise a synthesis of the theory and practice, by organizing the courses in the line from theory to practice;
  3. 3.Enabling young staff for good organization, planning and managing their own knowledge and carrier;
  4. 4.Acquiring knowledge through regular lectures and acquiring skills through practical knowledge and field training related to direct process of food production;
  5. 5.Individual profile created by the student, by selecting the courses;
  6. 6.Teaching in small groups, by emphasizing the student’s individual development and preparation for team work and managing group
